How do I register for a course?

How do I become a personal fitness trainer?
The personal fitness trainer certification is the most advanced certification offered by NSFA. Candidates should be a certified RTL or GFL for at least 6 months prior to enrolling in the workshop. As a PFT you are required to have emergency first aid as well as CPR updated annually.

What is the National Fitness Leadership Alliance (NFLA)?
The NFLA holds the national standards for fitness certification in Canada. NSFA is one of the provincial sectors of this national organization. When you are a member of NSFA you have the opportunity to transfer your certification to other provincial sectors.
How do I transfer certification to NSFA?
You can have a certification transferred to the NSFA in two ways:
1) If you are a member of a NFLA organization you can send a copy of your current certification and your current CPR validation to the NSFA office. The Association will honor the current certification and at this time will certify a candidate upon receipt of the appropriate membership/ insurance fee. In order to re-certify you will follow the NSFA re-certification requirements .
2) If you are not a member of a NFLA organization you are required to send the office a copy of your current certification and your current CPR validation. Upon successful completion of the written and practical exams (the cost of the evaluation is accrued by the individual) and payment of the membership/insurance fee you will be certified with NSFA. In order to re-certify you will follow the NSFA re-certification requirements.
How do I challenge the Fitness Theory course?
Individuals who wish to challenge the Fitness Theory exam must pay a fee of $55 to the NSFA. The fee includes the cost of the manual and the administration of the exam. If you do not pass the FT exam on your first attempt, you will need to attend the full course workshop to pursue certification with the NSFA.
What happens when my certification has lapsed?
Candidates whose certification expiry date was less than 6 months ago must:
- fulfill the recertification requirements
- submit a letter requesting extension
Candidates whose certification expiry date was within one year ago must:
- rewrite the specialty exam
- fulfill the recertification requirements
Candidates whose certification expiry date was more than one year ago must:
- redo the leadership workshop in the specialty area including the written and practical exam
- fulfill the recertification requirements
How often must CPR be updated?
In order for your certification to be valid CPR must be updated annually. Proof of CPR must be sent to the office to be kept on file. Re-certification cannot occur without a copy of CPR.
What is the insurance coverage offered by NSFA?
After extensive negotiations on your behalf, the NSFA is pleased to announce that as of 2004, all NSFA Fitness Leaders (Group, Resistance Training, Aqua and Older Adult) will receive $2 million Commercial General Liability insurance coverage through TOS Insurance Services Ltd for $30 per leader per year.
The NSFA mandatory insurance program will ensure that all Fitness Leaders have adequate coverage based upon their Scope of Practice regardless of where they instruct in the Province of Nova Scotia, and will complement existing coverage provided by some facilities.
